Anthurium Clarinervium
A compact epiphytic species native to the rocky limestone outcroppings and forest understory of Chiapas, Mexico — one of the few anthuriums that grows lithophytically on detrius-covered rocks rather than strictly as a tree epiphyte, giving it a slightly hardier constitution than many cloud forest species. More tolerant of average household conditions than most collector velvet anthuriums, and one of the better entry points into the genus for growers new to the velvet anthurium group. Compact in habit, typically reaching 16-25 inches indoors.
Light: Bright indirect to dappled light; tolerates moderate light better than most velvet anthuriums. Avoid direct sun which scorches the thick velvet leaves.
Soil: Open, chunky epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; excellent aeration is essential given its lithophytic origins. Never waterlogged.
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; humidity of 50-70% — notably more tolerant of average household humidity than cloud forest anthurium species.
Watering: Allow the top inch to dry between waterings; water thoroughly and drain completely. More forgiving of slight dry-out than most velvet anthuriums but never allow to sit in standing water.
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during active growth; dilute to half strength. Reduce in winter.
